All you need to know about mushrooms and immunity

Whilst there are plenty of immune-boosting foods are out there, few are as versatile, easy to use, and nourishing as mushrooms.

What is our Mushroom Superblend?

Our Mushroom Superblend sees organic Reishi, Maitake, and Shiitake mushrooms combine forces to create a blend that brings a special piece of far eastern Asian culture to your diet in a convenient powdered form.

What gives it a superfood status?

The superfood status originates from the impressive range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bioactive molecules found in mushrooms such as manganese, copper, vitamin B and D. Niacin (Vitamin B3) contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, whilst manganese contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Most impressively, just one serving of our blend delivers your entire daily requirement of vitamin D!

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D2 and D3 are the two major forms of vitamin D. Vitamin D2 comes from plant-based sources whereas vitamin D3 comes from animal and dairy sources. Foods containing Vitamin D3 include salmon, eggs, cheese milk.

Other than dietary supplements and fortified foods which have had Vitamin D added to them, mushrooms are the only natural plant-based source of vitamin D2. In a similar way that vitamin D3 is produced in your skin, when exposed to sunlight compounds in mushrooms trigger the production of vitamin D2.

Vitamin D and Immunity!

Although its primary function is to maintain adequate amounts of Calcium and Phosphorus, Vitamin D goes through various biochemical reactions in the liver and kidney that the body uses for cellular functions including immunity. For example, it plays a role in balancing the immune system by decreasing the amount of pro-inflammatory molecules whilst increasing anti-inflammatory molecules in the body.

Seasonal decreases in vitamin D levels in the blood during winter is now well established due to an increased amount of time spent indoors and reduced hours of sunlight. Unfortunately, the signs of vitamin D deficiency aren’t always immediately obvious, rather they materialize when a deficiency is more severe and prolonged. A very effective and accessible way to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D year-round is to introduce vitamin D dense food into your diet.

What does it taste like?

As the only plant-based source of Vitamin D, mushrooms should be a staple part of a healthy balanced diet. However, they do have a unique flavour and texture, which is not always appealing to everyone. Luckily, our blend has a subtle earthy flavour that blends well into a variety of dishes without altering their flavour too much.

How can I enjoy Mushroom Blend?

Incredibly versatile and easy to use, Mushroom Powder can be added to your breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Try mixing a spoonful into your morning coffee for a lovely complex flavour (our favourite!), add into your smoothie, or sprinkle over your bowl of porridge. What better way to start the day than with a dose of mushrooms rich in vitamins B and D to keep that winter cold at bay?

You can enjoy the benefits of mushroom powder at lunch and dinner too. Switch the avocado toast for wild mushrooms on toast or try out a Mushroom Boosted Sticky Tofu which is divinely sweet and loaded with nourishing veggies. Mix it into a mushroom risotto, Superfood Stuffed Pumpkin or add a teaspoon into any soup for extra layers of flavour.

Alternatively, make a relaxing cup of Mushroom Cacao hot chocolate to help you drift off into a restful night’s sleep.
