Discover Nikita's journey into a plant-based lifestyle

Have you ever wondered how the human body receives sensory information? It does through the five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. These senses are what brings back memories. So, as food involves all these senses, it’s no wonder all my memories involve food in some way.

I have always loved food. Both my parents are fantastic cooks, so it’s safe to say my childhood was filled with delicious food. I grew up in South Africa (where meat is a big part of our culture), so I had never thought I would ever be vegan.

“Give up meat? Give up cheese? No way!” – I used to think. I’ve surprised even myself.

In 2018 I was diagnosed with PCOS. I had been suffering from the symptoms for years, so it was a relief to discover there were ways to improve them.

I was encouraged by the stories I read about various women with the same disorder that had cut gluten and dairy out of their diets and even went plant-based! Their symptoms seemed to get better, if not go away altogether. This was very enticing to me as I suffered quite badly.

At first, I was sceptical about cutting gluten and dairy out, I lived for a toasted cheese! I first cut out gluten and when I started noticing improvements, I cut out dairy too.

It wasn't until lockdown 1.0 that I decided to take advantage of the situation and started paying attention to what I was putting into my body. I started cooking more and decided to start a foodie Instagram and blog. I became very aware of my plant-based audience and I started experimenting with vegan cooking and I fell in love. Eating a wholefood, plant-based diet made me feel incredible inside and out!

On this journey, I also started reading more about hormone imbalances and came across the word "Superfoods". This changed the 'game' even more. Superfoods have become a massive part of my diet and I include at least one superfood in everything I eat.

I focus on consuming superfoods that help fight inflammation and oxidative stress, as well as the and ones that balance hormones.

Each superfood comes with its unique health benefits and I love finding new ways to implement more of them into my diet. Superfoods can be very versatile and can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. From porridge, smoothie bowls, muffins, brownies, cookies to curries and salads – the possibilities are endless!

I have learnt so much already and I continue learning every day.
